The Opportunity

Our Operations and Maintenance Department has an exciting opportunity for a Fleet Mechanic - Workshop to join the team. Reporting to the Senior Mechanic, this role will be responsible for maintaining, testing and repairing Council's Fleet, in accordance with user manuals and established polices / procedures, ensuring the safety and roadworthy state of all vehicles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Detect and diagnose faults in the Fleets engines and parts;
  • Repair and replace worn and defective parts and reassemble mechanical components, referring to service manuals as needed;
  • Perform scheduled services to ensure Council vehicles are always maintained and are in a roadworthy and serviceable condition;
  • Test and adjust mechanical parts after being repaired for proper performance;
  • Diagnose and test parts with the assistance of computers;
  • Ensure all activities in the workshop are carried out in accordance with sound safety practices and in compliance with relevant legislation;
  • Coordinate ordering of parts and consumables in line with Council's Procurement Policy;
  • Manage day to day activities of the workshop including booking, prioritising and scheduling of all workshop activities;
  • Undertake audits of plant and equipment, log books and service records;
  • Work with the Fleet Team to ensure all maintenance schedules are programmed and completed on time.

About You

  • Motor Mechanic / Plant Fitter qualified, Certificate III in Engineering Mechanical Trade plus a post trade's certificate or equivalent.
  • Several years of mechanic experience across all facets of fleet maintenance and repairs including experience with heavy diesel plant, particularly Council vehicles / machinery such as road sweepers, tractors, trucks, compact wheel loaders, various minor plant such as ride on lawn mowers, whippers and blowers .
  • Demonstrated welding and fabrication skills; competent in Mig, Arc welding and oxy-acetylene cutting.
  • Competent in electrical diagnostic fault finding.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of computers and software relevant to fleet maintenance activities would be an advantage. Good written and verbal communication skills to work effectively as a team member and to provide good internal and external customer service.
  • Ability to identify problems, provide recommendations to solve issues and escalate if required.
  • Physically and mentally fit to undertake duties as outlined in this position description. The position requires the incumbent to complete a pre-employment medical check
  • Current Victorian drivers licence (Heavy Rigid), forklift licence (LF) and other plant licences would be considered an advantage.
  • No relevant criminal record found in a police check.

We are looking for a customer-focussed self-starter with good written and verbal communication skills who can work effectively as part of a team. Your ability to identify problems, provide recommendations to resolve issues and your experience working in a similar role will be well regarded. Demonstrated experience in the use of computers and software relevant to fleet maintenance activities would also be considered an advantage.
